In the Lifestyle section of the Sunday Corvallis Gazette Times I saw this photo. Married 70 years on February 13th.

It boggles my mind to imagine anyone being married for 70 years. It just doesn't seem like it would happen in this day and age.
Were things built to last longer back then? Take for example the chair in both pictures. It belonged to her parents and they still have it. Re upholstered many times over but the same frame.
I imagine just like that chair, their marriage lasted because they have 're-upholstered' themselves throughout their lives together. A hopeful young couple passionate and in love is wonderful but to survive people must evolve into mature and loving adults who work together through the hard times of early marriage and their , military separations. Then they would 're-upholster' again to become parents and caretakers. Retirement and an empty nest would bring on yet more change and bring about a new fabric.
The frame of their marriage is as solid and as beautiful as the frame of that chair.
